The event was a humble success, with great participation coming from art enthusiasts of different ethnicity and all ages.

Faddho delivered the Khat introductory workshop, giving participants an overview of khat - a traditional written artform in Arabic alphabetic schema which is considered as one of the divine languages.

Synopsis

Participants will get a chance to learn writing their own names in an expressive Arabic calligraphic style and appreciate the aesthetics of a traditional typographic representation. More on the Artist
Faizal Somadi is a graphic designer and freelance artist based in Singapore. He has trained in Latin calligraphy for 14 years and took up Arabic calligraphy about 8 years ago. His calligraphic works aim to explore the way of the words and letters and craft them into beautiful visual manifestations. Learning calligraphy from various teachers locally and in Malaysia, he has worked and learned with various Singapore-based international artists and professionals by involving in various projects and exhibitions. Apart from participating in local and regional art exhibitions, he occasionally conducts calligraphy workshops. Faizal seeks advice from a religious scholar particularly pertaining religious aesthetics. He’s also an active contributor to local arts club The Mediterranean Visual Arts Club (The MVAC). Apart from his graphic design profession, he also receives calligraphic requests from private clients. He remains passionate about Arabic calligraphy and continues to explore greater calligraphic pursuits.

This event is organized by the MVAC and Faddho, in conjunction with Prizm 2010 Graduation Show and supported by NLB.

Featured Young Artist: Shahril 'Shane' Alfian

Welcome to the Brand New Year~

Every bi-monthly, The MVAC will be featuring artworks by young designers. This month of January we'll kickstart with a selection of visual designs by 19 year old Shahril 'Shane' Alfian a recent graduate from the Digital Media Design course at ITE College West, Ang Mo Kio.

Shahril or better known as Shane is a soft-spoken designer, currently awaiting admission to study Visual Communications and Motion Graphics at a local polytechnic. He was selected amongst his peers in his cohort to undergo a special study visit in 2008 at the renowned Lim Kok Wing University of Creative Technology, Malaysia where he attended a workshop on 3D Animation.

Shane has a strong Japanese neo-traditional influence. Neo means new, as traditional becoming new once again. In design, the neo-traditional genre fell out of favor from the 1940s through the 1970s and since then has been emerging in newly defined ways.

Not necessarily the lavishness of the 1980s, today's neo-traditional is elegant, refined, sophisticated, yet often subtle or understated - as depicted in several of Shane's visual works.

Singapore Design Festival is BACK

The third Singapore Design Festival is taking place from 20-30 November this year. A lot of exciting design exhibitions, talks, seminars and screenings will be taking place. Expect to see some interesting design exhibits and installations in in the city area, especially if you go on one of these Design Trails: Brash Basah, Orchard, Singapore River, Tanjong Pagar, Arab Street and Chinatown.

The focus of the festival is to explore how design can make a difference to improve lives and create possibilities for tomorrow. Many great designs started with someone asking, "Why not?"

Future/Nature: Jordan Ng's Grafitti Exhibition

Singaporean budding artist Jordan Ng is having his 1st high street exhibition this November featuring some of his best graffiti painting pieces as well as some of his latest ones.

Here's Jordan in his own words:

"I've been doing space paintings for over 10 years now, learnt this technique when I was a wee little kid. The technique of space painting is unlike normal graffitti and pieces that are made can take from about 45 seconds to 1.5 hours based on the complexity of the work."

If you're into graffiti art, you surely would want to check out Jordan's unique spray paintings or what he calls "space painting". In his debut exhibition, Jordan explores a vision of the natural and the futuristic in his landscapes, offering interpretations both feminine and masculine.

[Premiere] A Scandalous Durian Love Affair

Background:

On the 3rd Nov 2008, amidst an Eid Adha festive setting, Firdaus "Fidd" Ajmain asked us out to eat D24 durians at Geylang. The outing saw the meeting of familiar faces who now wear different make-ups. I only had one full durian and some pinches of the leftovers.

While looking at my friends indulging on the 'forbidden' fruit, I reflected on relationships & matters of the heart. If I ever had a crush with anyone on the durian table, I knew how temporal the feeling would be.

This video was inspired by the un-usualness of the occasion - an invitation to eat durian. A 5-min or so crush with someone over at the table, an odd mix of people with familiar faces who have been together for nearly 5 years.

Durian has always been a fruit that brings back memories.

To pay tribute to the fruit, The MVAC website (www.themvac.com) turned 'YELLOW' on 12 Dec 2008, a color that signifies sacredness, sanctity, caution and hope.

What Say U? Eid Adha (video by NYPMSN)

Eid Adha OR better known here in Singapore as Hari Raya Haji or Hari Raya Korban is a celebration that gets clouded with misconception with distractions from other bigger and much anticipated festive occasions like Christmas or even Hari Raya Puasa (Eid Fitri).

Muslims in Singapore celebrate Eid Adha on 20 December 2007 with the slaughtering of sheeps whose meat are donated to the less fortunate. Eid Adha is celebrated worldwide to commemorate the sacrifice made by Prophet Abraham who was ready to submit to God's command, to the extent of even losing his own son, Prophet Ismail.

The En-Naeem Family Carnival was held last weekend with an impressive display of booths that ranges from food, clothing, games as well as henna and calligraffiti demonstrations by the MVAC crew.

The MVAC kept up with its roadshow presence by offering henna design services as well as live calligraffiti artwork demonstrations for the residence of Hougang.

Bro Psyful led the team of 9 talented designers who gave the audience more than they can wished for.

The calligraffiti artworks were created by Bro Faizal Somadi, Bro Qhairul Asmai, Bro Farhan, Bro Fairus and Bro Hilwan.

The henna services were courtesy of Sis Mardhiah, Sis Amyna, Sis Dina, Sis Saqinah and Sis Sarah.

Wed, 11 July 2007, Home Team Academy: Marked the Passing Out Parade for the 45th batch of Officer Cadets with Md Hilwan Md Idrus, MVAC's webmaster, commissioned as a Police Inspector.

The Reviewing Officer for the parade was Mr Masagoes Zulkifli BMM, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, MOE & MP for Tampines GRC.

During the ceremony, Hilwan's parents came to wear the Inspector's insignia on Hilwan's shoulder straps.

Firdaus Latif, Aminah, Siti and Remy Mahzam were amongst the audience who witnessed the regimental parade. More photos of the POP are viewable here.

Madrasah Aljunied's Khat Calligraphy @ Yescom

hey! salams all. Mardhiah blogging for MVAC's blog for the first time. :)

Last Sunday 1st July 2007, was the Grand Finale of the Young Entrepreneur Skills Competition (Yescom) organised by The Association of Malay Entrepreneurs (KESUMA) held at Toa Payoh HDB Hub. Around 29 groups got into the finals and they had to mend their booths from 9am to 6pm. And I had to write about the story so that's why i was there.

Anyways the main highlight that i'd like to share with u guys and girls is that Madrasah Aljunied's booth had Khat Calligraphy making. U can choose for it to be done on papyrus paper or wooden sticks shaped like huge lollipops (they were really cute) plus they all wore something batik (ohh, not top-to-toe batik but things like kain batik wrapped around like a sari) as their trademark. hey maybe we should do that for mvac events huh? (besides wearing pink, hehhh =p)

So I decided to have one done for myself. And I actualli had to wait for one hour! woah... it was a HUGE hit coz none of the stalls offered calligraphy. I think the non-muslims liked it too coz it was beautifully done. Another reason for the long wait was that they only had 2 people doing the calligraphy. I guess they didn't anticipate it to be such a hit at first.

Okay so enough of the ramblings. Pictures speak a thousand words (in Arabic perhaps?).

The presentation was nice, they rolled it and put it inside a transparent wrapping paper after it was done. Love their creativity.

Launch of Overseas Network Portal

Sunday, 30 June 2007: The MVAC was invited to the launch of the Community Leaders' Forum (CLF) Overseas Network Portal, www.globalmalays.sg at the Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts (MICA).

Several representatives from the MVAC & NYPMS were present; Remy Mahzam, Md Hilwan Idrus, Firdaus Latiff, Aminah, Md Ishak & Iryani; together with other 200 guests at the MICA ARTrium, in the presence of the Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, to witness the launch of the Global Malays overseas network portal.

In the efforts to engage Singapore Malay/Muslim individuals who are living and working overseas to share their views with regard to the globalisation phenomenon, a group of young IT entrepreneurs, who called themselves as UTAMA, has come together to assist the CLF Secretariat to set up a dedicated Overseas Network Portal.

The portal will serve as a platform to link local Singaporean Malay/Muslims with those who are working or studying overseas. It will facilitate an open interaction where Singaporean Malay/Muslims who are thinking of pursuing global opportunities can learn from others and read about their experiences.

The Global Malays logo was designed by the MVAC. To capture the Malay/Muslims' participation in the globalisation movement, the Global Malays, Singapore logo uses straight clean edged typography while blending in graphic icon of the globe. The design encapsulates the positive outlook for the Malays in their endeavours to achieve success in foreign lands while preserving their Singaporean values.

At the launch, the MVAC rubbed shoulders with several interesting people, MP for Hong Kah GRC, Mr Zaqy bin Mohamad, Member of Government Parliamentary Committee, Mr Masagoes Zulkifli, Iskandar Jalil, professional ceramist whose work is ranked 12th in the world, local graffiti talent, TraseOne, Mohd Firman Osman, a computer graphics designer for KOEI Entertainment, Nurhidayati Yahya & Md Rizal Yacob from Saff Perdaus, Esa Han, President of Mendaki Club, Muhd Ibur Rashad, NUS Students' Engineering Club and Zafirah, an MDIS undergraduate.

Adi - NS bound

MVAC's calligrapher & Nypms ex-Vice chairperson, Adi Asputra Sarip is undergoing National Service at Pulau Tekong.

His absence will be greatly felt by his family and MVAC homies. Adi is attached to Pegasus, 'P' company and is currently going through confinement / orientation week.

Adi will be able to book out from 28 June onwards and will graduate from BMT on 11 September 2007.

10 June 2007 - After much have been said about improving the design scene amongst youth activists, the MVAC initiated the first of its kind, Photoshop workshop at Al-Muttaqin. The workshop which was intended for members only got the attention even from other youth groups including Saff Perdaus, NAFA & Republic Polytechnic MCG.

The workshop was divided into 3 parts; 1) Design & Concept Fundamentals, 2) Design in Adobe Photoshop and 3) Content Creation

MVAC's trainer, Remy Mahzam, said, amongst the objectives of the workshop is to "promote a mature approach towards design and event promotions" in the local volunteer groups' scene. The sad reality of design-making is evidenced by the standard and quality of design works produced by volunteers as portrayed in their posters and other publications.

Graphics are either pixellated & of low resolution and problems in positioning of text and images in posters created by several youth groups are overlooked.

The Photoshop workshop by the MVAC serves to address this issue.

Hilwan Idrus, another MVAC trainer, pointed out a poster designed by a youth group had its text which contain important information on the event, positioned in an obscure background with inappropriate font type and color. The poster suffering from this standard will definitely have problems marketing and promoting the event.

The MVAC aims in educating youth in effective design creation. Photoshop, an industry standard design application is introduced to the participants and techniques were shared. The participants were also given hands-on session to explore Photoshop at their own pace.

Nur Diyana, a participant from RPMCG, commented, "For an amateurish Photoshop
user like me, it did feel enlightening getting to finally discover more abt it for the very first time. Definitely came home pleased with the valuable info bites received..."

Plans for second running of the Photoshop workshop are underway and members will be kept updated on what would be in store for them.

The MVAC would like to thank those who came for the workshop, well-wishers and Bro Adi Asputra and the YAQIN volunteers who helped us on Sunday.

Aksara - MVAC's debut Calligraffiti Workshop

On the 13th Jan 2007, the MVAC was invited by National Library of Singapore through Assyakirin, to conduct a digital calligraffiti workshop for the Aksara - The Passage of Malay Scripts, "Menjejaki Tulisan Melayu."

It was MVAC's public debut appearance to conduct a workshop to an audience of 40 people, mostly tertiary and high school students.

The workshop was made possible through a link up by Bro Ridhwan and Bro Hasrudi from Assyakirin who introduce NLB to the MVAC. Plans started almost a month before the event day. The MVAC team made up of Remy Mahzam, Hilwan Idrus, Sarah Adam, Adi Asputra, Qhairul 'Q' Asmai, Faizal 'Sumeria', Sadiq, Nursaqinah, Mardhiah and Khadijah turned up to deliver the 1 1/2hr workshop.

Faizal 'Sumeria' a trained calligrapher was generous in sharing khat writing techniques to the audience. Sarah and Sadiq played the role as emcees while Q and Adi became workshop facilitators. Remy presented the finishing bit on digital calligraffiti with Photoshop.

The Aksara event got a news coverage reported by Ahmad Dhafeer Zainodin who interviewed the MVAC's founder, Remy Mahzam and the workshop participants who gave positive feedback for the MVAC.

MVAC launch + Minhah Iftar

21 October, the night of 29 Ramadan 1427H, MINHAH, a joint iftar collaboration between Nypms and Nur Ikhwan was held at An-Nahdhah.

The organising committee left an impressive mark on the audience that ranges from officials from An-Nahdhah, the Harmony Centre, NYP lecturers, Heads from various tertiary societies and special invited guests.

Mr Zainuddin Nordin, MP for Bishah-Toa Payoh GRC graced the event and witnessed the launch of the Mediterranean Visual Arts Club website together with a unique rendition of the Ummah Mosaic pieces put together by the representatives of the tertiary societies.

Aligned to the MINHAH Iftar's theme, Strengthening Ukhuwwah Towards Taqwa, the guests were involved in an interactive ice-breaker. Symbolic Jigsaw Puzzles were unscrambled by the students of the tertiary institutions with interesting awards; Mr Taqwa and Ms Ukhuwwah.

A short film, produced by Nypms & NI was screened before the closing ceremony. The MINHAH Iftar committee would like to thank Bro Psyfool, An-Nahdhah, the Harmony Centre and Mendaki for being the event supporters.
